One Lamb: Addiction

“There are all kinds of addicts, I guess. We all have pain. And we all look for ways to make the pain go away.” Sherman Alexie

We all know someone or multiple someones who struggle with alcohol abuse and or addiction. We also probably all know someone who abuses prescription drugs or is hooked on illicit drugs. Abuse and addiction permeate the fabric of our society and our families. It is a problem that is all too common. Yet, while being seemingly ubiquitous, it is also all too often, swept under the rug. We find it to be an embarrassing, shameful weakness of character. However, studies show and science proves that abuse and addiction are not fundamental character flaws but a complicated mixture of biology, environment and development.

The One Lamb Mental Wellness Initiative strives to provide resources for those who struggle with abuse and addiction. Interviewing real life, normal people who have struggled and overcome their substance dependency, talking to experts in the field and giving people a safe place to learn about their addictive behavior and how to persevere. It is our goal that abuse and addiction will be treated just like any other chronic disease like asthma, heart problems, cancer or diabetes by utilizing strategies, coping skills and treatments. Our goal is to end the stigma surrounding addiction so people will get the medical and personal help they need to conquer this debilitating illness.

In October 1994, William Cope Moyers was flat on his back on the floor of an Atlanta crack house. His father, veteran journalist Bill Moyers, had put together a search party while his desperate family waited at home, where he had abandoned them three days earlier. Many times before, his life had unraveled from the effects of marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol binges, but it was his crack addiction and relapse, he remembers, that caused his father to look into the eyes of his firstborn son and utter the words “I hate you.” He answered “I hate me too.”
